Suprised!
I'm very suprised to see an author take the time to give a warm greeting on his book listing. I love it and wish all authors did! I'm buying the book and look forward to reading it, will try to review later! Thanks!

Gripping!
More exciting than a Jack Olsen book, and more authoritative than an Ann Rule book. Web of Deceit is top-notch reporting. Top shelf for true crime afficianados. I highly recommend it.

Where the Creosote Blooms: A Memoir (Chisholm Trail Series, No. 19)
Published in Paperback by Texas Christian Univ Pr (April, 1999)
Author: Mary King Rodge
Average review score:

This Could Be the Story of My Life!
I just finished reading "Where the Creosote Blooms" this week while visiting my Mother who still lives in the home where I grew up -- you guessed it, on Mountain Avenue, in El Paso, Texas! Although my house was "up the hill" a few blocks, and my growing up years in that neighborhood were about 30 years later than the book's author, Mary King Rodge, the similarities were still abundant.

I, too, used to cross Copia Street after a day of school at Rusk Elementary to choose from the array of candy at Quinn's Grocery. Life was slow but sweet in the shadows of Sugar Loaf and Mount Franklin. And as Mafra says, there was the sun, always the sun.

Because of that sun, how we cherished the rain! While on my visit to my Mother's, we had one of those "gully-washer" thunderstorms that the author describes. Ahh, the wonderful smell of the creosote and the sagebrush after a rainstorm in the desert...

I'd recommend this book highly to anyone who grew up in El Paso. You will be pleasantly reminded of things you may have long forgotten! The author spins a page-turning tale of her personal memoirs of her adolescent years, but also a colorful description of life in El Paso in the 20's and 30's.

Life on the Last Paved Street
Where the Creosote Blooms, by Mary King Rodge is a delightful romp through the outer reaches of El Paso, Texas in the mid-twenties and very early thirties. MafraUs adventures are believable, and are true to the thoughts, feelings and actions of the people of her old neighborhood.

The description of the flash-flood coming from McKelligon Canyon on a day when her house got only a moderate amount of rain was exactly the way those floods occur. The trash, mud, snakes and debris has to be seen to be described with such vividness. She describes this flood in an arroyo that has had houses and a park built over it for at least the past fifty years, and flood control dams upstream have reduced the floods, and books with descriptions like this are our only touch with a wilder, more unrestrained past in a city that was just becoming tame.

She has caught the essence of her neighborhood that was still there twenty five years after her book closes. I can remember in the mid fifties the feeling around Rusk School that White's Grocery (Mr. Printz's) was not a good place, and Quinn's Grocery across the street was good. I don't know why we thought that; it was just the feeling that pervaded the elementary school. Now, having read about Mr. Printz and the person he was, I understand my neighborhood better.

Growing up was easier in those days. The villians were clear, and friends were faithful through it all. There was humor in her neighborhood, both in thought and in deed. The chapter about learning to ride a bicycle only during lunch when it was available was very funny. I especially enjoyed her ride down the hill while hollering to all who were in earshot to tell her where the brakes were.

I recommend this book to late teens and adults with an interest in history of the Twenties, the problems of growing up on the edge of civilization, and general history of the Southwest. The story is delightful and the book flow along with little effort. It is a gem of personal history.

Who Will Fix the Royal Windows? Story, Puzzles and Pattern-Play Blocks for Early Math Fun! (Jr. Groovy Tube Book)

Authors: Joanne Mattern and Paula Pertile

Great for learning shapes and spacial relations
My daughter received this book as a gift when she was 2 1/2. She loves to do the puzzles and now knows all of her shapes, including trapezoid and hexagon. Very educational and fun.

Great introduction to some fun math!
We bought this for our 2.5 year old daughter and she loves it! It's great for finding patterns, learning shapes, sorting, matching edges, symmetry...there's a lot going on in this activity book. The pieces are solid and bright, and it's nice to have a storage container built right into the spine of the book. As a (former) math teacher, I'm thrilled to have this for my toddler!

William Shakespeare's Richard III: A Screenplay
Published in Paperback by Overlook Press (March, 1996)
Authors: Ian McKellen, Richard Loncraine, William King Richard Iii Shakespeare, and Ian McKellan
Average review score:

Looking Behind the Scenes
McKellan's sceenplay for his movie of Richard III is a great read for anyone interested in how a script becomes a play or how a play becomes a movie. McKellan's side bar comments on how scenes were shot or decisions were made on what language to cut, change, or move are insightful and a lot of fun. Because the movie started as a stage production, the book addresses not only how to film Shakespeare, but also the changes that can or must be made when a play is filmed. Also worth nothing is McKellan's introduction, which contains the best explanation of blank verse (Shakespeare's verse form) that I have ever encountered. I recently repurchased this book through Amazon; I lent it to one of my college professors a few years ago and never saw it again. I can't think of many books that I'm willing to buy twice, so I give this book my wholehearted endorsement.

A Most Satisfying Collection
I use the word "collection," because readers will not only be treated to the screenplay, but also to Sir Ian McKellen's breezy, comfortable style of writing in his thorough introduction and annotations. For those familiar with his Official Homepage notes, Sir Ian captures you most willingly with his conversational tone and easy wit. (There are also plenty of well-captioned b/w photos to support "the script.") An excellent purchase.

Another Great Story By Max Lucado
Max Lucado writes amazing stories for children and this one is no different. Through out the whole story you learn more about God and how He can and will be with you all the way throughout life's journeys. Every time i open one of his books I learn so much. Mr. Lucado's books especially poin out good Christian teachings in ways that children can understand the best. I can't wait until I read the rest of the book like this one. I read this book in about 5 minutes and I loved it. The story is a simple one but an amazing one. I grew up in church and the moral of this is one tha tI have heard many times already. Thsi story put it into different words that I know my children will love as much as I did. Each prince is given the chance to marry the king's daugher but first they must make it through the forest. No one has even entered the forset and then left it. THe king's special glute will guide them. If they loose site if it they will be lost. How do they make it though? Which one will make it first? Who will be thir one companion? So many questions. Read the book it is a childrens book made for all ages. Enjoy the lessons hidden within

A quest worth the trip
Three princes are given the same challenge: Be the first to travel through the woods and arrive at the king's castle. The winner may marry the king's daughter. No one who has entered the woods has ever come back. Each may choose a traveling companion. Each has the promise of hearing the king's flute three times a day to help guide him. But only one will find out who will be with him all the way. This book captured the imaginations of all the boys in my class.

The Woman Who Defied Kings: The Life and Times of Dona Gracia Nasi
Published in Paperback by Paragon House (April, 2003)
Author: Andree Aelion Brooks
Average review score:

ABSORBING!
Acclaimed journalist Andrée Brooks has painstakingly delved into the deepest recesses of European history to produce a compelling account of the life of Doña Gracia Nasi, an extraordinary and powerful businesswoman of the Renaissance. I was utterly swept away by the story of this courageous humanitarian who managed to rescue thousands of her people from the terror of the Inquisition. Fascinating reading for the layperson, this definitive work of scholarship is enhanced by more than sixty pages of notes and an extensive and carefully prepared index. Brooks' engaging prose makes the sixteenth century come alive as few other books do. This dramatic page-turner has all the right stuff for a major motion picture!

Next: The Movie?
This story of a Renaissance heroine reads like a novel: A brave young Jewish widow takes over her husband's international banking business, lends money to kings and dukes, exacts the freedom to flee from one country to another to escape the Inquisition, and rescues thousands of Jews. Yet the story is true, based on documents discovered by Andree Brooks in Spain, Portugal, Belgium, France, Italy, Jerusalem and Istanbul. Her research is tucked seamlessly into a racing narrative that takes the reader into the life and turmoil of the 1500's. It's the stuff movies are made of--we hope.

A new look at doña Gracia
This lively, meticulously-documented biography is bound to become the touchstone of Gracia Nasi scholarship for years to come. Using hundreds of documents not available to Cecil Roth-whose biography of Doña Gracia has been our main source until now-Brooks has finally set the record straight about the life of this heroic Jewish Renaissance woman. Brooks' lively prose and knack for dramatic detail should insure the book a wide popular readership as well. In what other single source can you find information about the medicinal uses of pepper, the intricacies of sixteenth-century silver speculation, or what it was like to be a wealthy passenger on a Mediterranean galley?

Brooks weaves hundreds of seemingly unconnected strands into a compelling tapestry of Doña Gracia and her times. I was particularly taken by Brooks' evocation of Jewish and converso life in the succession of Renaissance centers-Lisbon, Antwerp, Rome, Ferrara, Venice, Istanbul, and Tiberias-in which the action unfolds. That alone would justify my assigning this book to my students. So too would Brooks' treatment of the complex "underground railroad" by which Doña Gracia and her family helped thousands of conversos to escape the dangers of life under the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions.

Brooks' work also makes a significant contribution to our understanding of sixteenth-century economic practices in Europe: the movement of goods, the intricacies of commercial contracts, the development of letters of credit and exchange, the birth of the maritime insurance industry, money lending, and tax farming.

The Woman's Study Bible
Published in Paperback by Thomas Nelson (December, 1998)
Author: Thomas Nelson Publishers

Excellent resource
I am excited each time I open the pages of this Woman's Study Bible. I own over 25 bibles and this is one of the best I have used.

The study group I am in will be looking at the lives of most of the women in Scripture to see how to apply or avoid the things we learn from their lives. This bible has profiles on many of the women, deals with subject matters that help you to apply biblical principles, and shows you the role women played in the life of Jesus. Their commentary on the text is very insightful and gives clarification according to the context of the verses.

It is hard to find fault with this study bible. It comes in softcover, hardcover and leather (at reasonable prices). The print is good, nice margins, NKJV text, cross references, concordance and an index of the charts, notes and profiles. There is also historical information. such as, Women and Archaeology, at the beginning of the bible.

I am familiar with several of the contributors and have heard them speak or have read their works. These ladies are of sound reputation in their doctrine and their dedication to the Word of God.

I thank God for this resource and hope every woman who is serious about studying the Word gets a copy for their library. I highly recommend The Woman's Study Bible.

Excellent Study Bible for Women
This bible is a wonderful resource for any woman who wants a little extra information to go along with the Scripture readings. The print is large and easy to read, and the extra notes are clearly separated from the actual Scripture text. The notes are informative and thoughtfully written, and are specifically geared to issues and concerns of today's woman. I would recommend this Bible to any woman actively involved in a bible study class or any woman wishing a more in depth look at the Scriptures.
